Nearly 50 years ago then-teenagers Joe, Christos and Charlie became friends while recovering from paralyzing spinal cord injuries on White 9, a medical floor at Massachusetts General Hospital. They and others with similar injuries helped spur the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 35 years ago and the development of the independent living movement.
